"Purely Positive Training - Companion to Competition"
Sheila Booth
ISBN 0-9663020-0-1
This book covers the principles of positive training, the basics (use of the lead, puppies, manners etc) and then how to train the sit, stand, send away etc all using positives and no corrections. The chapter titled "The corrections" has a quotation from Monty Roberts: "No human being has the right to say to (an animal), you must or I'll hurt you." and advises "Put that correction off for one more day". It ends with "Be your dog's salvation, not his persecution. Be his best friend. BE WORTHY OF YOUR DOG!". It explains that positive does not mean permissive. The dog must demonstrate acceptable behaviour to get his reward. He must choose to offer the correct behaviour in order to earn privileges, food or acceptance. It is important that as pack leader you are fair and that the dog is always able to trust you.
Throughout the book the author reiterates that there is "no wrong dog", if the dog makes a mistake it is not his fault. I enjoyed this book, the exercises were easy to follow (though some were explained more fully in the author's previous book "Schutzhund Obedience: Training in Drive") and I liked the message that dogs can be trained to the highest levels in obedience, Schutzhund etc using positive methods.

WHERE TO BUY AND WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT TOP TOYS
KONG
Number one on every dog and owners list seems to be a Kong. They come in a number of different sizes to cater for every dogs taste and are nearly indestructible . Warning don't leave them outside they can weather and degrade leaving your house covered in little chewed bits of red rubber. For the really determined dog go for a black kong. Some dogs don't take to them at the start a good tip is to stuff them with something tasty, cream cheese or even paté. Dogs are instantly interested and it occupies them for ages trying to get it all out. They are easy to clean and good value for money. You of course buy ones that float!
Loads of information available from Kong distributors The Company of Animals
Magic Mice -They are brilliant
They are mice made out of fur fabric, with leather ears and eyes and a tail - that's all - and yet every single dog I've met would sell its soul for one! Mine are green so they are nicely camoflaged in the grass when we play 'nosework' games. You can use them as lures to get the dog to sit, down, come, sendaway etc. etc. - dogs just seem to adore them! I keep mine just for training sessions to keep them special and Brick LOVES his!!! He is a real piggy when it comes to food, but when hes' 'working' outside he won't take food so rewarding him and motivating him used to be hard - but once I get Magic Mouse out he's stuck to me like glue and will do ANYTHING!! They really are brilliant and I have no idea why they are soooo appealing to dogs, they just are!!
