1. What will happen when we arrive at the port in England?
Your paperwork will be checked to see that you have the correct documentation to travel to France this means having a valid Export Health Certificate.
2. What happens if I lose my pets paperwork on holiday?
It is wise to take copies with you. Otherwise you will need to acquire copies of your pets vaccination details from your vet and blood test results from the lab. Then you can get the PETS certificate re issued abroad .
3. Do vets in France know about PETS?
Yes but its still very new. Some vets have been dealing with the system but for others it is the first time make sure you know whats required and be prepared to spend some time going through it with the vet. It is also important that you use a vet that has access to a scanner. These are not common in France. You may prefer to bring your own. As long as a vet has access to a scanner any registered vet can fill in the certificate for worming. A government vet needed to fill in your Pets travel certificate is called a Veterinaire Sanitaire. Please note some travellers have been turned away from the port as they have not got he correct documentation. It must be an official certificate for PETS and also for worming a French vet must now apply to: S.N.V.E.L. - 10, place Léon Blum - 75011 Paris Tel- 01.44.93.30.00
4. My dog is very difficult to give tablets to can I use another wormer?
The vet can only use a wormer that contains Praziquantel, like Droncit. Droncit comes in both tablet form and injectable.
5. What happens when we get to the port to come back?
Your paperwork will be checked and your pet will be scanned you will not be allowed to board if things are not in order.
What to do if things are not in order
6. Where can I get advice on the PETS scheme?
The rules are explained by MAFF on their site you can reach them by the link on this page. You can also send an email to Le Dog Stop .We have a uniquely experienced team on hand to advise you including a former quarantine and RSPCA kennel manager as well as a qualified vet nurse. With over 5 years experience in importing and exporting pets we have been through this all before. The Le Dog Stop team have already advised many people on all aspects of the Pet Travel Scheme. The first dogs using Le Dog Stop went back Mon 28th the fourth dog from Europe to enter the UK, more went back from Cherbourg and more are planned.

7. My vet says I must have my dog tattoed is this right?
Yes and no, for the PETs scheme your dog is not required to have a tattoo but for French resident dogs you cannot implant a microchip unless your dog has been tattooed.
8. Can I take my own scanner?
Yes, no reason why you can't at all this saves trying to find a vet with a scanner. Mini trackers are supplied by Avid at pettrac@avidplc.com cost £50.00.
9. What happens if my pet fails his blood test?
In this instance you will have to look at the reasons why they failed. It may be a faulty test or more likely your pet has failed to produce a good enough reaction to the vaccine in which case a repeat vaccination would be necessary along with another 30 day wait.
10. Does the scheme also apply to the republic of Ireland?
No, the Republic of Ireland does not operate the Pets Travel Scheme and you cannot enter direct from the continent with your pet. However animals that have entered the UK legally under the Pet Travel Scheme can travel to the Republic of Ireland.

Microchipping in Holland is very common and finding a vet equipped to do the certification and who understands the regulations is straight forward. All Dutch seem to have an uncanny mastery of the English language which makes the whole thing simpler as Brits are not known for their familiarity with Dutch.
**************************************************
It is unlikely that you will be driving from Italy to the French coast in the time limit so it would be better to look for vets a little closer to the crossing point. Vets at the port of Calais are well eqipped and can be found on this site listed under Calais, France. Others in different regions of France are also listed on this site.
******************************************************
Microchipping in Spain is now obligatory for resident animals so you should have no trouble finding a vet that can do the certification. Finding a vet en route to do the worming certificate may be difficult as French vets are not as well eqipped and you may find yourself having to make a dash for the Port. St Malo is the closest port to Spain where you can cross and there are listed under Brittany, France, vets that can do this documentation near to the port of St Malo. Why not spend a day enjoying the delights of Brittany whilst passing the time before you are allowed to travel?
***********************************************************
Merial a French company providing scanners has made a HUGE mistake with the documentation and put out a flyer to all French vets detailing the procedure for the new scheme it states that the microchip can be done at a later date and that first a blood test must be taken after having a Rabies Jab this is so incorrect its criminal!! People will suffer for this when they get to the port please read MAFF regulations link at top of the page or in French at L'ordre Veterinaire
UPDATE
It transpires that the reason for producing this literature is that the French government is not up to date and hasn't put the legislation in place to distribute chips to vets in France. The list of vets published on this site is current and up to date. However there are frantic negotiations in place to try to sort this out the French MAFF are under the impression that all animals following the French protocol will be given entry as yet this is not law in Britain and MAFF UK are battling with organisations such as the British Veterinary Association to try to see if an exemption can be made. It is possible, BUT it also may not happen no one is sure. I will keep you up to date.
NEW INFO
The French are going ahead with their protcol even though its still not been officailly ratified by the british Authorities that won't be until the middle of May. One word of warning if your pet is done under the French Protocol its paperwork won't be valid for the other qualifying countries in other words if you then move to Spain you can't get a renewed PETS certificate you must start again. You have been warned!
You can now get your vet to get the correct certification and information from S.N.V.E.L. - 10, place Léon Blum - 75011 Paris Tel- 01.44.93.30.00
Next stop to find a vet with a scanner to complete the certificate or take your own. We are working on a complete list the information will be up as soon as it is available.
link to where you can obtain a scanner or vets with scanners
