TRAVEL TIPS AND ADVICE

CHECK LIST

If you are travelling abroad for the first time with your pet you are bound to feel a little anxious here are a few tips to help things go more smoothly.

1. If you are travelling by ferry try to choose a short crossing or if not possible an overnight crossing.

2. Whilst on the ferry you can check on your pet at any time by asking the staff to escort you to the car deck. Pets however are not allowed above the car deck.

3. Make sure you pack a water bottle and bowl. If you choose to feed your pet on the journey individually foil packed meats are better than trying to keep opened tins of meat, biscuits will store best. Remember that not all pet food brands are available abroad and it may be wise to take your pets food supply with you. Particularly if he has a sensitive tummy.

4. It is always a good idea to make sure that you have left a comfortable spot for the dog. Finding a gap after all the luggage has been loaded is not to be recommended and your pet will appreciate the comfort particularly if you have a long drive ahead.

5. If his usual bed is bulky to pack, take a piece of vet bed which can be bought in any good petshop. It is very comfy and was originally designed for recumbent dogs with mobility problems so is just the trick. It is also very easy to wash and dry, doesn't shrink and always comes up clean. It is also reasonably resistant to those little chewy moments that some dogs have.

6. Losing your dog in a foreign country is no joke. Different countries have different systems to trace lost pets and may NOT be able to trace your pet with its microchip be wise before the event get your pet an identity tag. Make sure you have packed your water spray. A quick squirt on your dogs legs, belly and ears will help to cool him down.If he doesn't like the spray a dampened sponge or face cloth will help.
