FAQ 1. What will happen when we arrive at the port in England?
Your paperwork will be checked to see that you have the correct documentation to travel to France. This means ensuring that you have a PETS certificate and a PETS 5 certificate this will be needed for your return to the UK.

FAQ 2. What happens if I lose my pets paperwork on holiday?
It is wise to take copies with you. Otherwise you will need to acquire copies of your pets vaccination details from your vet and blood test results from the lab. Then you can get the PETS certificate re-issued abroad.

FAQ 3. Do vets in France know about PETS?
Yes but its still very new. Some vets have been dealing with the system but for others it is the first time. Make sure you know what's required and be prepared to spend some time going through it with the vet. It is also important that you use a vet that has access to a scanner. These are not common in France. You may prefer to bring your own. As long as a vet has access to a scanner, any registered vet can fill in the certificate for worming. It is wise however to check that the vet you intend to use has copies of the worming certificate as they need to be ordered. A government vet needed to fill in your Pets travel certificate is called a Veterinaire Sanitaire. Please note, some travellers have been turned away from the port as they have not got the correct documentation. It must be an official certificate for PETS and also, for worming, a French vet must now apply to: S.N.V.E.L. - 10, place Léon Blum - 75011 Paris Tel- 01.44.93.30.00 for these certificates so think ahead.

FAQ 4. My dog is very difficult to give tablets to can I use another wormer?
The vet can only use a wormer that contains Praziquantel, like Droncit. Droncit comes in both tablet form and injectable.

FAQ 5. What happens when we get to the port to come back to the UK?
Your paperwork will be checked and your pet will be scanned you will not be allowed to board if things are not in order.

FAQ 6. Where can I get advice on the PETS scheme?
The rules are explained by MAFF on their site you can reach them by the link on this site. You can also send an email to Le Dog Stop .We have a uniquely experienced team on hand to advise you. This means that even in France you can get help and advice if needed.

FAQ 7. The vet says I must have my dog tattooed is this right?
Yes and no, for the PETS scheme your dog is not required to have a tattoo but for French resident dogs you cannot implant a microchip unless your dog has been tattooed. A tattoo is not required for dogs and cats that are visiting France for a holiday.

FAQ 8. Can I take my own scanner?
Yes, no reason why you can't at all. This saves trying to find a vet with a scanner. Mini trackers are supplied by Avid at pettrac@avidplc.com Cost £50.00 plus VAT.

FAQ 9. What happens if my pet fails his blood test?
In this instance you will have to look at the reasons why they failed. It may be a faulty test or more likely your pet has failed to produce a good enough reaction to the vaccine in which case a repeat vaccination would be necessary along with another 30 day wait.

FAQ 10. Does the scheme also apply to the Republic of Ireland?
No, the Republic of Ireland does not operate the Pets Travel Scheme and you cannot enter direct from the continent with your pet. However, animals that have entered the UK legally under the Pet Travel Scheme can travel to the Republic of Ireland.

FAQ 11. If I live in a non qualifying country can I use PETS to avoid quarantine?
If you are prepared to meet the Pet Travel Scheme requirements, including the minimum six month residency required in a qualifying country, then you can qualify your pet under PETS.

FAQ 12. Do I need a pets passport to leave the UK?
No but you will definately need one to re-enter the UK. You must make sure that if you have any intention of returning to the UK with your pet that you seek professional advice on your pets passport before leaving the UK.
Problem solving: If you find a problem and haven't already left the UK the worst that can happen is that you may not be able to travel and the process of completing the PETS scheme will take longer. If you are abroad this can have more serious consequences. If you are concerned over any detail of your Pets Travel Scheme then feel free to email Le Dog Stop before you travel to verify the details. Remember we have done this several times before.
